Make It Yourself Metal Detector : : XPIThe unit is comprised of 3 boards. The Mainboard, witch contains the DSP and a 1 bit PWM DAC for audio as well as headers for a HD4. LCD, User Interface Switches, and the two daughter boards, one for the Analog Fronted (RX) and one for the Mosfets controlling the TX function. The Analog Fronted board contains the 1. MSPS Low noise ADC and is connected to the CPU with a high speed SPI link, This board contains 2 high speed op amps providing a gain between the two of them of 5. The TX Mosfet driver board contains an Isolated 2ch Mosfet driver as well as the two mosfets to drive a double O coil.
I chose the Daughter board configuration to allow for easier upgrades in the future and make debugging easier. The secret to it's deep penetration is low noise, Everything is designed from the ground up to minimize all types of noise. To do this XPI utilizes the following techniques. Averaging: XPI takes 6 samples (first 5 detection and the sixth is a ground balance sample) during the fly- back decay and averages them each against the last 6. To do this we have to process 6. This level of performance is only made possible by the high powered XS1- L1 DSP. By averaging in real- time over each individual sample set an extremely high degree of noise removal is possible.
Insanely Powerful EM Field: Because of this, XPI will probably never pass electronic remittance requirements which govern this type of equipment and will therefore remain as an experimental kit only, but since I'm in this for more than money the advantages of a much stronger field are huge. A stronger field punches deeper into all types of soil while overpowering background noise that may be present in the area. Wow,The XPI seems like a great detector, sounds like you have it already planned out with PCBs. When will we see a kit/PCB's?
Have you built a prototype yet? What target price are you shooting for? I'm shooting for a total price of around $3. BOM which is my goal. As a newbie, I would buy this as a kit. Please keep me informed.
Marv. Posted by. Jan 2nd, 2. Please keep me informed. Posted by. admin. Jan 2nd, 2. 01. 2. Hey guys! Thanks for all the responses I will send you out an update on the progress when I find the time! Right now I am still perfecting the software side of things.
Jon. I may start a mailing list to keep people informed. Do you have any test results? What type of soil, trash rejection, metal selection, target Ident., soil balance, audio volume, LCD readout, coil type and size, power requirement and so on.. Btw I am into electronics (Ham) but also a writer, if you like I would edit your web page. There are a number of typos, spelling etc. I am in Manitoba and heading for Black Hills SD in the spring.
Then later in summer I am going to northern MB for hard rock and tailings. I have a Tesoro and a Garret scorpion plus dry washer, sluice, mini- dredge, Gold Magic wheel . Looking forward to more info. Sparky. Posted by. Feb 2. 9th, 2. 01. Hi Sparky, I do have test results but I won't be posting them.
When I can get a good source for all the parts I need (Control rod, Box, Coils etc..) so things will be consistent across multiple units I will send a number of units out to experienced prospectors around the world for in field testing. They can post the results that they find. That way it's not me. If I go out and post results their will be no end of loyalist Minelab GPX users defending their unit and criticizing my test methods, timings, coil, ground, em noise in the area, experience, ground balance, etc, etc.. All I will say is that from my experience this unit performs better than a gpx 4. I tested it. I don't have access to a Minelab GPX 5. As for some details, the display provides access to settings (Time to each of the 6 samples, frequency, flyback blocking time, number of samples to average, Pulse duty cycle, gain(not working yet), sample significance (Similar to minlabs timings, this setting allows you to choose the significance of each of the 5 flyback samples I.
E. Early samples for finer gold), Damping(also not working and only currently manually adjustable from a knob on the front), There are lots more settings but I can't think of them now. As far as information displayed on the lcd, besides a host of debugging parameters, the display shows the following information, Battery Voltage, Ground mineralization level, percent likelihood that target is gold (Basis it on the response pattern) and strength of each of the samples as well as an overall strength. Ferros targets are indicated by a lower tone on the ear phones, possible gold targets will give a higher tone while normal or unsure targets will only change volume. I'll send you an email about the website stuff.
Jon. P. S. Will release pics of the unit as soon as I get another camera (my first one gave up the blue smoke). Posted by. ANDREW WIENS. Mar 2nd, 2. 01. 2. This is so cool a kit. Posted by. alexis. Mar 1. 1th, 2. 01. Hello, Keep me informed when your cool kit XPI is ok : )thanks,Alexis.

Hi sounds like what we need!! The methology being used on pulse sampling then running average is most excellent. I could most likely help you out with the op amps and other issues as needed. I make my living for the last 2. Designed a bunch of circuitry through the years using operational amplifiers especially with low noise front ends. I should be able to help you out.
Keep up the good work and keep me informed about your progress. I am very interested in finding out more. Please keep me informed as you may have a sale here once everything come together. Thanks,Tony. Posted by.
Apr 2. 6th, 2. 01. Count on me, I need one. Posted by. Nickel? Keep up the good work and I hope you manage to complete soon.
I am a resident of the UK, hope that does not shut me out. Many thanks John. Keep me updated on the good work. I have several decades of experience in the field of electronics and software testing and debug..... I can be of assistance.
Feel free to contact me.... Jim. Posted by. May 2. I hope you have a kit out soon, I'll buy one. How much do they cost to buy? Are there easy to follow assembly steps?
How do I order one? Many Thanks. Dimitri. Posted by. Dimitri. Aug 8th, 2. 01. 2. Hi There. Are these kits available now? How much do they cost to buy?
Are there easy to follow assembly steps? How do I order one? Many Thanks. Dimitri. Posted by. peter. Aug 1. 0th, 2. 01. Hey!!!!!!! 1 good work when will this xpi detector be ready?? I am a Autocad draftsmen and can help with drawing any part that will help with the design to make templates and diagram if need be.
I know having the drawings of a prototype are very helpful when it comes to making the directions for assembly of the project. Also helps if some thing needs to be out sourced. Russian Model Young Girls Art. I am very interested in a board kit and maybe other parts. I'm also interested in the Tiny. My knowledge of electronics and metal detecting is minimal but I can smell an opportunitywhen I see one (that is, if your device does what you claim it can). I have a sizable nest egg that pays paltry dividends, and I want to invest it in something with a lot of potential, and I think your device has that.

Sep 1. 6th, 2. 01. I'm working on a similar project but at the other end of the scale. I am involved in archery and we consistently lose arrows into the ground on field and target shoots i. I am working to try and create a small metal detector for picking up stainless steel, iron , aluminium or brass which are what either the arrows or points are made of. My aim is to get the metal detector in the end of a 1/2? Any body got any ideas or schematics for how I can do this ?
Thanks, and this is a non profit scheme. Pity if so, but good luck. Please don't give up on this project.
I noticed there are many people on your forum that want to aid you in your endeavor. This may be a good idea to check into if you haven't already. Please keep me posted as to any further progress. Things are very busy here and right now I am working on completing an EE and Business degree.
I haven't been able to put as much time into this as I would like too but we are working witha company out Australia to provide a low cost PI unit/kit based on the XPI circuitry. Kind Regards,Jon. Posted by. Oct 8th, 2. Hey, I would like to purchase a kit also, looking built a metal detector that has the same functions andstability as the GPX 4. Hey, I am also a partner for with Advertizing Firm, I would be glad to help with your marketing when you are ready. Do you sell it direct? How much does it cost?
Do you have them in stock? Thanks. Dimitri. Posted by. Oct 2. 6th, 2. 01.
Posted by. nemat. Oct 2. 6th, 2. 01. Within a week I have already lost a couple of pounds and am continuing to lose them pretty consistently. I am very happy and happy about the results of this product. I should be retired but still do some programming, currently javascript, but have done real time control in assembler and other languages. Your projects sound really interesting.
Please let me know if you can release more information. I like your approach. Phil. Posted by. Mourad. Nov 1. 4th, 2. 01. Posted by. CRISTIAN.

Dec 2. 4th, 2. 01. Please count me in on the XPI kit, I already have the blanket antenna to pull behind my quad. Hopefully you're still interested/able to complete the XPI.
Any updates yet? FWIW, if you can avoid the patent pits, I'd be really interested in the basic kit.
